Beginning with a short chapter introducing the concept of heredity, this well-written book continues with a broader explanation of the principles of inheritance using many examples based on the classic experiments of Gregor Mendel.

The next topic, cell division, is a more detailed but clearly explained treatment of mitosis and meiosis, which uses examples such as body growth and repair, cancer, and karyotyping to illustrate some of the relevance of the subject. A chapter on molecular genetics explains DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis with illustrated sections on replication, transcription, and translation. Related topics such as DNA repair, viruses, the achievements of Watson and Crick, and gene regulation are included. There are also instructions for a lab activity on extracting DNA from a kiwi fruit.

A chapter on genomes addresses genome size, linkage, variation, DNA hybridization, gene probes, and mitochondrial DNA. Readers will find interesting trivia, such as the fact that the genome of lilies is almost 40 times larger than that of humans. …
