I made a mistake when I first started reading On Teaching Science: Principles and Strategies That Every Educator Should Know; I didn't use a highlighter. It is perhaps the best book on teaching that I have read in my 37 years in the profession. Although its main focus is teaching science, any teacher would benefit from reading it. My copy is now very marked up.

Jeffrey Bennett starts by defining teaching as a way to transfer knowledge from one person to others and as the means to acquire additional knowledge. He then gives purposes and hallmarks of science. This is a section every science teacher should read. As he begins to lead readers into how to teach, he provides one key to learning that will resonate with most everyone: "Learning requires effort and study. …
