This book is a succinct introduction to the causes and consequences of severe oxygen deprivation, or hypoxia, in the world's oceans and other bodies of water. Commonly known as dead zones, these often lifeless stretches of water can be found all over the world, but as the author makes clear, the vast majority and largest of them lie along the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard of the United States.

Moreover, the author makes equally clear that the culprit is excess runoff from the overuse and overproduction of fertilizers, manure, and other compounds rich in nitrogen and phosphorus.
