When I received this book for review, I flipped though it immediately to find tips and suggestions for children who keep one or more of these fascinating reptiles as pets. When my son was eight years old, we satisfied his fondest wish and bought him a Great Plains Northern Rat Snake which he kept and cared for until the animal's demise over ten years later. I was initially disappointed to find that Cindy Blobaum's book says nothing about keeping live animals. Instead, she presents simulations, model building activities, and pages of interesting facts about snakes that are sure to interest children who, like my son, have developed an interest in these beautiful and interesting creatures.

Blobaum explains lucidly why she does not advocate keeping snakes as pets, citing habitat destruction and declining populations among the factors that should sway one against keeping one at home. Among the forty activities in the book are a construction project in which children make moving models of a snake's jaws and fangs and another activity using rubber bands, paper clips, and an envelope to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake. …
