The nine stories collected in this volume, The Aventurous Unjung and Mbui Kuvong: Oral Literature and a Punan Tuvu' Dictionary from Kalimantan, are a living testimony to the life of the Punan Tuvu', an ethnic group of North Kalimantan (Propinsi Kalimantan Utara). Often full of allegories, these stories or "tales" (mbui) are classified as fairy tales, legends, or myths which are proper to the Punan Tuvu'. Kuvong is the name of one of the most characteristic figures of Punan Tuvu' lore. The tales concern heroic characters and places, representing basic components of traditional Punan culture, and have been transmitted from generation to generation from ancient times.

The Punan Tuvu' language, which, like other minority languages in Indonesia and throughout the world, is endangered, embodies knowledge, values and wisdom that urgently require conservation. This anthology aims to make available these collected tales as a linguistic and cultural document. …
