Huddled Masses

This issue marks our 22nd consecutive annual spring issue devoted to the theme "Science for All." It serves as an umbrella for ideas and strategies to narrow the persistent academic achievement gaps associated with ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, physical disabilities, limited English-language proficiency, and learning differences.

Although written almost two decades ago, the National Science Teachers Association's position statement on multicultural science education (see "On the web") remains relevant and important today. It serves as a shining example of our nation's highest ideals and most cherished principles:

"Science educators value the contributions and uniqueness of children from all backgrounds.... A country's welfare is ultimately dependent upon the productivity of all of its people. Many institutions and organizations in our global, multicultural society play major roles in establishing environments in which unity in diversity flourishes.... We believe that ALL children can learn and be successful in science.... Children from all cultures are to have equitable access to quality science education experiences... required for them to become successful participants in our democratic society."

In this time of political upheaval it can seem as if the very idea of diversity as a value is at risk. A spate of recent news reports document alleged hate crimes and harassment: dozens of bomb threats to Jewish schools and community centers, desecrations of religious cemeteries, distribution of white supremacist and anti-Semitic propaganda, anti-Muslim hate crimes, harassment of LGBT students, increased emphasis on deportation of immigrants, and attempts to restrict immigration. …
