This book uses the concept of extinction to teach chemistry, climatology, paleontology, biology, ecology, and a lot of geology. The science information is historical and current, drawing on three-dimensional learning by incorporating science practices to determine what factors affect extinction.

The integration of concepts helps bring the science alive. The interactive side notes with website addresses are helpful, as are the fun QR codes, which link to a variety of sources to dig deeper into specific content. These links alone make the book worthwhile.

The activities include hands-on investigations, giving students opportunities to conduct experiments, practice science while making connections, and communicate their findings. Some activities use data already collected; others have students collect their own data firsthand. The concept of science and engineering practices is evident throughout the books and its activities. While the activities overall are safe and use common household items, I would prefer that eye protection and science safety had been addressed. …
