James B. M. Schick Graduate Best Essay Award

This award recognizes outstanding scholarship by a graduate student at Pittsburg State University as selected by a panel of PSU faculty. Winners not only receive a cash award of $500, but also have their winning essay published in The Midwest Quarterly. Graduate students in any discipline at Pittsburg State University may submit papers for consideration by the committee.

The award was created in 2015 to memorialize Dr. James B. M. Schick, the long-time Editor-in-Chief of The Midwest Quarterly (19812012), who was for fifty years Professor of Early American histoiy at PSU. A pioneer in computer-assisted history education, Schick founded and edited History Computer Review from 1985-2003 and published widely on this subject, including a book, Teaching History With a Computer (Lyceum, 1990).

The Stephen Meats Poetry Prize

The Stephen Meats Poetry Prize will be awarded once each year, starting in 2017. The prize is named for poet and Professor of English Stephen E. Meats in recognition of his service as Poetry Editor of the journal from 1985-2016.

The prize winner will receive a cash award of $500. All poems published or scheduled for publication in an annual volume of The Midwest Quarterly will automatically be eligible to win. The prize will be funded initially by The Midwest Quarterly and the Pittsburg State University College of Arts & Sciences. …
