National Office and branch activities.

When the Standing Committee met on 14 September, members responded to the President's invitation to give their views on the function of the NZIIA. At the end of the discussions, the President undertook to prepare a paper for the next meeting, bringing together the ideas that have been put forward.

The term of the present Director, Bryce Harland, is due to expire at the end of January 1999. The Standing Committee authorised the President to negotiate an extension of the term for one year ending in February 2000.

During August and September, the Director visited Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton, and addressed meetings of these three branches. He also spoke to a meeting of the Wellington branch. The subject of his talk on each occasion was `Crisis in Asia: China, Japan and the United States', the text of which appears elsewhere in this issue. Two roundtable discussions on Indonesia were cohosted by the NZIIA, and reports will appear in this and the next issue.

At the time of writing, preparations were well under way for the NZIIA seminar on 15 October on the question `Co-operation or Confrontation? Economic and Security Prospects for the Asia-Pacific Region'. More than 100 people will be present. …
