Reference Collection Development

Article excerpt

Updated Bibliography, 1990-1997

This is selective bibliography is a project of the Collection Development and Evaluation Section's (CODES) Reference Collection Development and Evaluation Committee. It identifies books, reports, chapters, and articles published between 1990 and 1997 that deal with some aspect of reference collection management. The listing continues the 1991 compilation of articles on this topic, which was published as Reference Collection Development: A Bibliography (RASD Occasional Papers, Number 11).

The entries in this bibliography are grouped into 10 sections: general guidelines, policy formulation, sample policies, organization and staffing, budgeting, selection, collection maintenance, ready reference collections, evaluation, and electronic reference sources. The Electronic Reference Sources section includes citations to materials that discuss related collection development issues only; evaluations of specific products were not included, since these become dated as new versions are released. Materials that focus on products available for a specific discipline (e.g., chemistry) or a specific type of reference material (e.g., encyclopedias) were also not included, for the same reason. The citations to material on the Internet and the World Wide Web are limited to discussions of collection development issues only.

Members from several "generations" of the RASD Reference Collection Development and Evaluation Committee contributed citations and annotations for this bibliography. The listing was edited by Jean McManus, Catherine Brown, and Caroline Harnly.

* Articles marked with an asterisk appear in The Reference Librarian, volume 29, 1990 and were copublished in a monograph entitled Weeding and Maintenance of Reference Collections, edited by Sidney Pierce, published by Haworth Press.

# Articles marked with the pound sign appear in The Reference Librarian, volume 33, 1991, and were copublished in a monograph entitled Opportunities for Reference Services: The Bright Side of Reference Services in the 1990s, edited by Bill Katz, published by Haworth Press.
