Distance Learning Forges New Path

An unprecedented advancement for distance learning is in the works with a new agreement between Western Governors University (WGU) and The Open University of the United States (OU-US) to create Governors Open University System. Combining the strengths of both universities, Governors Open University System will not only deliver a wide range of technology-delivered academic programs, it will also offer students a choice of both competency and credit-based programs and degrees.

"This is a significant development in U.S. higher education and a truly unique international agreement, one that is designed to leverage the recognized strengths of both Western Governors University and The Open University," said Governors Michael Leavitt (Utah) and Roy Romer (Colorado), co-chairs of WGU's Board of Trustees. "As this cooperative effort moves forward, people throughout the U.S. will benefit from a common organization offering access to a greater number of learning opportunities and the added flexibility of both competency and credit-based programs."

The distance learning opportunities currently available at both WGU and OU-US will be offered through Governors Open University System. …
