Linda Aiken, PhD, FAAN, was elected an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom. She is Claire M. Fagin Leadership Professor Nursing, professor of sociology, and director of the Center for Health Services and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania.

The first annual Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award was presented to Cornelia Beck, PhD, FAAN, a professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The award was created by the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing of New York University and the Gerontological Society of America to honor Doris Schwartz, well known as a pioneer in geriatric nursing research. Mary Ann Anderson, PhD, RN, CS, from Weber State University in Utah, was awarded the first Springer Publishing Co. award for Geriatric/Gerontological Nursing Research.

A series of awards for 1998 has been presented by the American Association for the History of Nursing. Julie Fairman and Joan Lynaugh are winners of the 10th Lavinia L. Dock Award for Critical Care Nursing: A History, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. The 8th Teresa E. Christy Award was given to Susan Winters for her doctoral dissertation, Enlightened Citizen: Frances Payne Bolton and the Nursing Profession, University of Virginia.

Mel Haberman, DNS, FAAN, is the new associate dean for research and funded projects at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education/Washington State University College of Nursing in Spokane. …
