Are You Y2K Ready? Tell Your Customers

"Happy New Year 2000!" was the banner of the full-page ad in USA Today and a video news release beamed via satellite to local TV news affiliates nationwide in January. Those activities are part ABA's strategic communications initiative to assure consumers that banks are working now to keep their customers' money safe for Jan. 1, 2000.

Testing and upgrading computer systems, working with the federal and state regulators, creating contingency plans, as well as information on FDIC-insured deposits were all highlighted in the ad. The video news release, which may be used by local television news departments in its entirety or to support another story, features consumer tips and interviews with ABA Executive Vice-President Don Ogilvie and John Koskinen, chairman of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion.

ABA offers many products and services to help bankers communicate their Y2K readiness:

* A series of four ads, which are available free for banks to use in their own marketplace. Fax a request to ABA at (202) 663-7578.

* A Communications Kit is available free on ABA's Web site, www.aba.com, in the members-only section. Included in the kit are a sample speech, letters to customers and stockholders, teller-training tips, and a list of helpful Y2K Web sites.

* Three statement stuffers aid in Y2K communications. …
