The library at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) houses one of the world's most extensive collections of books, periodicals, and exhibition catalogs on modern art. Although it focuses on Surrealism and Dada, it also contains documentation on emerging artists and some lesser-known ones. The catalog for this library, called DADABASE, is available on this CD-ROM-product and through the Internet at the MOMA homepage, www.moma.org. For the CD-ROM product, the accompanying instruction booklet contains a six-step installation process that is very easy to follow, and worked the first time it was loaded on two separate PCs.

The CD-ROM has a very powerful, if somewhat less than intuitive, search tool, with extensive searchable indexes, including Notes, Content, Imprint and Global Keywords, Material Type, Language, and LC Card Number. Boolean operators are basic but sufficient for most searches and include AND, OR, and NOT as well as before, after, and wildcard symbols.

The search and display windows seem to be designed for research professionals rather than for students. The search history window, for example, can be a very useful tool for complex searches. A global keyword search on "Monet" will yield 161 hits. A date of publication equal to 1981 will yield 3,040 hits. …
