The Kindergartners Program "I like Me!" Promotes a Good Self-Concept

I am delighted to be here with you, and I congratulate you on the wonderful, wonderful work that you do. Head Start is in its 33rd year of operation, serving over 850,000 low-income children and their families. Our children are from birth to age five. We are in over 2,200 programs in the United States including Guam and the trust territories.

The overall mission of Head Start is to provide comprehensive services to children, and families, so that they may enter school ready to learn. Our main focus is on promoting a good self-concept and language development, a perfect match for the wonderful "I Like Me!" program I'm happy to be a part of and support the program.

The National Head Start Association represents those 2,200 programs throughout the country. Our members are parents, staff, executive directors and friends of Head Start, including 50 state affiliates and our 12 regional associations. Our office is celebrating 25 years as an association, and I guess our strongest area is advocacy.

While Head Start is a popular program with bipartisan support, without strong members writing, talking and inviting them as a congress to our centers to see what we do for children and their families, the program would not continue and would not have had the success it's had. …
