Creation of a New Food Protection Credential Begins

The association's effort to develop a new food safety and protection credential formally began at a meeting in Las Vegas on February 13, 1998. The first task of the project's core committee, made up of 12 Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in food safety and protection representing government, industry and academia nationwide, was to develop a Job Analysis Survey instrument. The survey results will detail the day-to-day tasks of a food safety and protection professional and will be used to develop the content of the credentialing examination. The credential's next stage of development includes sending the survey to food professionals, reviewing the survey results and writing items (questions) for use in the exam. The process of creating a quality, legally defensible credential is a tedious one. The committee is currently on track, however, to complete this process in time to offer the completed examination by the 1998 NEHA AEC in Las Vegas next June!

NEHA is developing the food safety and protection credential through a contract agreement with the National Assessment Institute (NAI) - the same partnership that created the NEHA REHS/RS exam. In addition, this project is supported by the Conference for Food Protection (CFP), the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO), and the NEHA Board of Directors.
