This is a remarkable book, both in the scope of its purpose and in the comprehensiveness of its treatment of main areas of concern for social development. Its stated purpose is no less ambitious than to "seek to identify the future directions that social development should take to ensure widespread prosperity for the world's peoples."

The book is divided into three parts. In part 1 the authors discuss the values and aims of social development, the historical context of various understandings of social development (going back to the 1950s), and progress in social development to date.

Part 2 consists of nine chapters, each written by a subject expert, that discuss major areas of concern for social development: human rights, community participation, conflict and peace, gender equality, the environment, ageing and the well-being of elders, religion and spirituality, social protection, and enhancing global cooperation and partnership.

In most of these nine chapters the writers use as the point of departure the Millennium Development Goals and targets and the Sustainable Development Goals and targets. …
