Article excerpt

Salt water beats the sky's wing. A hurricane is water in love with air and air in love with water-- fluttering cardiopulmonary heat, enough condensation to power a continent of kiss. Waves and wind, laced flesh to flesh, rise, tear and reunite feather by feather, spinning inward. Women call me from my body, open the creaking gate away into the wide blue cerebellum, and I rise, play feathers from my navel, and know I'm still in love somewhere. In their shrinking voices, I hear distant marshes, cattails, water, and earthen flesh, fingers and lips and dark fragrance of feet that can't quite touch down. Outside of myself, outside of them, still in love with every place I've ever laid my hand. Out bodies climb from under the torn mattresses where we once slept, but not again. Day and night fall. We prowl, homeless, together, hunger through shattered cupboards for whiskey, canned beans and a sharp knife, heat fresh butchered meat on a fire of doors. High above highwater, under a drank, fed moon, we nest on a hill and dream cardinals back into the trees, sleep back to belly, another storm. Slivers of the what and how god and other nomads spread more feathers from my irises and return as rain to mark the body where I should be asleep, nose to your neck, not unraveling over cornfields and the moonlit backs of horses. …
