   They call for the rain,    Scream when terrified,    But female frogs do not sing.     They vanish.    In the arid Southwest    Under rocks, in the shadows    Meditating for moisture.     Amphibious.    From the Greek    "Living a double life"    Of transformation, metamorphosis    And the long wait.     Unlike the map turtle with its graphic directions.    Who so dreads the advent of hibernation,    He continues to move in slow motion    Under the ice after early freezes.     An indicator like a prophesy,    The female frogs vanish.    From the arroyos, the stagnant pools,    One imagines the song they do not sing.    Of drought, and of water.    The patience of sacrifice.
