Remarks from the First ABC European Convention: Business through Language and Communication

THIS SPECIAL COLUMN HIGHLIGHTS, especially for those unable to attend, the main themes of the first convention arranged by the European Region of the ABC. Held on 20-22 May 1999 in Helsinki, Finland, the conference attracted attendees from many geographic areas, with approximately one-fourth of the participants from outside Europe, including the US and Asia. For this column, we asked the three panelists who formed the convention's closing session to provide their remarks for readers of Business Communication Quarterly.

The theme of the convention, "Business through Language and Communication," drew the interest of academics as well as business professionals and highlighted research, teaching, and practice. It also foregrounded the familiar argument that business and communication go together. Even more important, the theme placed the concept of language on the same level with communication, something multilingual Europeans are particularly aware of. The theme led to six presentation tracks: 1) International and intercultural aspects of business communication, 2) Analysing professional interaction, 3) Teaching language through business content, 4) Language needs in business, 5) New technologies for business communication, and 6) Evaluation of international skills. …
