Recognizing the significant achievements of individual innovators is a core mission of the Innovation Research Interchange (IRI). The IRI Medal, established in 1946, is presented to recognize leaders of technology for outstanding accomplishments in technological innovation that have contributed broadly to the development of industry and the advancement of science and society. The Medal, which is awarded at the discretion of IRI's Board of Directors, is presented at IRI's Annual Conference. In 2019, the Board awarded the IRI Medal to Leroy Hood.

The 2019 IRI Medal was presented to Leroy Hood in recognition of his work in the fields of systems biology and DNA synthesis and sequencing, and for his contributions to innovation and society.

Dr. Leroy Hood's career began at Cal Tech, where he and colleagues developed the DNA gene sequencer, DNA synthesizer, protein sequencer, and protein synthesizer, four instruments that paved the way for the mapping of the human genome. He went on to apply those tools in the discipline of systems biology and develop a quantitative approach to wellness that could revolutionize medicine in the coming decades. To apply these discoveries, he has founded or cofounded 15 different biotechnology companies, including Amgen, Applied Biosystems, Rosetta, and Darwin. …
