Modeling and Motor Performance: An Examination of Model Similarity and Model Type on Children's Motor Performance

Visual demonstrations, or modeling is a process often used when teaching motor skills. Previous modeling research has examined the effect of model characteristics (i.e., gender, age) and model types (i.e., skilled, learning) on children's and adults motor performance. However, studies in the motor behavior domain have not yet sought to incorporate model characteristics (i.e., model similarity with model types). This investigation examined the effect of model similarity (boy, girl), and model type (skilled, learning) on children's acquisition, retention, and transfer of a novel motor task. Forty girls (Mage = 10 years) were randomly assigned to conditions in a 2 (model similarity) x 2 (model type) factorial design. These conditions included the following four treatment groups: (a) Male-Skilled, (b) Male-Learning, (c) Female-Skilled, and (d) Female-Learning. Participants were tested individually across three phases; acquisition, retention, and transfer. During acquisition the participants observed their respect ive model (via videotape) and learned to juggle three nylon scarves. After completing acquisition participants were given a 5-mm filled retention interval and then tested again on three scarf juggling.
