Mastery Motivational Climate Motor Skill Intervention: Replication and Follow-Up

The study of classroom motivational climate is a growing research topic that in the last several years has intrigued educators and psychologists. Consistent research findings suggest that the motivational climate in an achievement environment influences the goals that the individual adopts as well as their perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, and future engagement in activities (Ames, 1992a, 1992b; Deci and Ryan, 1985; Ryan and Grolnick, 1986; Walling, Duda and Chi, 1993). This study was conducted to determine the influence of motivational climate in a movement setting. Specifically, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of a mastery motivational climate intervention on motor performance of male and female kindergarten children who demonstrate low motor skill performance. This study also examined if the gains in motor performance resulting from the intervention were maintained 6 months later. Sixty-seven kindergarten children participated in this investigation.
