Perceptions of Education Majors about Elementary Physical Education: Impact of a Field-Based Elementary Physical Education Methods Course

The present study focused on the impact of a field-based elementary physical education methods course on elementary preservice students' perceptions of elementary physical education. The field-based course required students to attend physical education classes at an elementary school under the guidance of a certified elementary physical education specialist. The school physical educator served as a mentor teacher and model for the education student. To date, little research has examined the impact of an elementary physical education methods course on elementary preservice students. It is the attitudes and knowledge of these students about physical activity and physical education that could have a profound influence on the quality of elementary physical education programs, particularly in those school districts that continue to hire classroom teachers to instruct physical education. Research in this area may provide insight into the construction of an elementary physical education methods course. Participants were 97 (92 female and 5 males) elementary education majors enrolled in elementary physical education methods classes in the fall and spring semesters of 1998-99. They completed questionnaires at the beginning and at the end of the semester.
