Goal Perspectives and Self-Esteem among Adolescent Female Mexican American Athletes

Considerable investigation is sport psychology includes identifying participation motives. The study of motivation in sport contexts has revealed individuals who continue to participate are those who feel competent, able, or successful in athletic settings. The goal perspective theory contends individuals perceive competence, ability, and success through two distinctive orientations, termed task and ego involvements. A task goal perspective stems from one's own past performances, a self-referenced conception of ability. In contrast, ego perspective involves goals based on the performance of others, a normative view of ability. Allocentrism is a basic Hispanic cultural value emphasizing group cooperation, conformity, and readiness to be influenced by others and differs significantly from mainstream American values of individualism and competitiveness. Additionally, a traditional Hispanic gender-related expectation is that women lack power and influence, traits that could conceivably affect self-esteem, the val uing of oneself as a person. Mexican Americans (MA) constitute the largest and fastest growing subgroup of the Hispanic community, yet little data exists regarding cultural influence on goal perspectives and the self-esteem of the female MA athlete.
