The Music Library Association Has Announced Its Publication Awards for 1998

The Vincent H. Duckles Award for the best book-length bibliography or other research tool in music was presented to Glenda D. Goss for Jean Sibelius: A Guide to Research (New York: Garland Publishing, 1998). The MLA Publications Committee noted that "In the area of Sibelius scholarship, most primary sources and published research are available in languages not understood by many. Glenda Goss has organized this often obscure microcosm of knowledge into logical regions and has provided abstracts which are always clear and succinct. Her work will play a key role in bringing serious focus to a composer who has undeservedly received comparatively little attention from musicologists and theoreticians alike. She has provided for us a touchstone which will become the bible of Sibelius studies for years to come." [For a review of this book, see NOTES 55 (December 1998): 358-60.--Ed.]

David Thomas and Richard P. Smiraglia received the Richard S. Hill Award for the best article on music librarianship or article of a music-bibliographic nature for "Beyond the Score," NOTES 54 (March 1998): 649-66. The Awards Committee observed: "Through a thorough examination of the literature, the article further develops the concepts of the musical work and musical bibliographic families and challenges accepted cataloging theory and rules related to bibliographical relationships for music. …
