Every Exit an Entry

As playwright Tom Stoppard once said, "Every exit is an entry somewhere." How true this is for Danny P. Wallace and Connie Van Fleet, the journal editors who preceded me. In their final editorial, "Exit Laughing," they wrote: "This is our last issue as editors." At the time, none of us knew that this "exit" would eventually become a reentry.

Beginning with volume 40, number 1, Wallace and Van Fleet will return as the editors of Reference and User Services Quarterly--and add to their list of "firsts." In addition to being the journal's first joint editorial team, they are the only editors who will have served the journal under both of its names (RQ and Reference and User Services Quarterly) and the only editors to serve non-consecutive terms. But, what won't be new is the talent and dedication they bring to the job. With their background, vision, and skill, Wallace and Van Fleet will make, again, an outstanding contribution to the journal and its readers. We welcome them back!

As for me, I approach my "exit" with mixed emotions. When I interviewed for the editorial position, I told the selection committee I would serve for only one term. I had specific editorial goals that I believed could be achieved during that period. That proved to be true. The journal renaming and redesign are complete. The RUSQ Web site is up and continually expanding. The new column dealing with Internet issues is firmly established. The content of the journal is strong and significant. On two occasions (including this issue on virtual reference), entire issues have been dedicated to exploring important topics in depth. The editorial board has been expanded to include representation from the publishing as well as the library fields. By reviewing the best reference Web sites, we're enhancing our selection guides for the field. The reference review section, under David Kohl's outstanding leadership, has been notably expanded.

None of this could have been accomplished without the support of a number of people. …
