Latest Bruning Ag Award Winner Started on the Family Farm

LITTLE DID ED TUBBS SUSPECT, when he graduated in 1941 from Iowa State University with a degree in animal husbandry, what a long and varied path he was starting. A life began on an Iowa "century farm"--one owned by the same family or 100 years or more--has led to the Iowa banker's being selected as the latest recipient of ABA's Bruning Award.

Tubbs is the fourth banker to receive the honor. The annual award recognizes bankers who have made significant contributions to agricultural banking's efforts to assist farmers and ranchers over the course of their working lives.

Tubb's course was to take him through a much-admired career in agricultural banking. After college Ed Tubbs worked briefly as an extension agent, and then joined the Army, serving in World War II. On his return he worked the family farm.

After the Korean War he served as an instructor in a program designed to train veterans in farming, and this led to his recruitment into banking, in 1959, as a farm representative for Jackson State Bank in Maquoketa, Iowa. Then, a farm representative served not only as a collateral checker, but also as a sort of private sector extension agent. He also visited the Soviet Union in an early agricultural exchange--an episode that would be repeated many years later, under different circumstances.

From farm representative Tubbs quickly worked his way up to ag loan officer and then vice-president and director. Then, in 1966 Tubbs and a partner acquired a controlling interest in another local bank, Maquoketa State Bank. Today, that bank and three other institutions comprise $375 million-assets Ohnward Bancsbares. …
