Online in the Library. The electronic future proceeds apace at The Hastings Center. With the creation of the Center's first online library catalog, the Morison Library is ready to begin relabeling and reorganizing its 8,000-title book and journal collection. Each title has been recatalogued to conform with the Library of Congress classification system.

Since the Center could not afford a "turn-key" system, the new catalog was designed using a customized software application. The database design supports searching in various fields of the machine-readable record, including author, title, L.C. subject heading, isbn, and series title. The database has been installed on three computers, and center-wide access is planned, although there is first much to think about to manage and plan the Center's developing network and client/server environment. Concurrent runtimes of databases, licensing requirements, incompatible network components, network maintenance, and the operations staff cost for building a reliable and secure network are all new issues for the Center. In the absence of a full-time network administrator or academic computing office, we're pooling our knowledge and contracting with a variety of vendors. …
