How can managers respond to and benefit from increased workplace conflict triggered by a more diverse workforce, the impact of information technology, and the rapid rate of change?

Propelled by a changing and more diverse workforce, the impact of information technology and the rapid rate of change, today's workplace is one of great complexity that presents many opportunities for conflict. The direct cost, as well as the lost opportunity cost of conflict in the workplace is well documented. Mechanisms to resolve workplace conflict are important tools for today's organizations. The authors of the articles in this mini-forum examine workplace conflict and mechanisms of resolution from a variety of viewpoints.

The initial article in this series by Bruce Mayor, who works at the Merit Systems Protection Board, seeks to answer the question "Does ADR Actually Save Money?" Mr. Mayor provides a historical perspective of why public organizations have pursued alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and why the cost benefit component of the equation is so difficult to construct. Karen A. Jehn's article, "Benefits and Detriments of Workplace Conflict: Productivity, Morale and Innovation," discusses her research on how to reduce workplace conflict and how to use conflict constructively. …
