Article excerpt

It is a pleasure and an honour for me to introduce the guest editor for this special issue of IRM dedicated to African Christian Communities in Europe:

Dr Roswith Gerloff is an ordained minister of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). Her work experience includes experimental parish work in Berlin, ministry to former German-Jewish refugees in Oxford, a fellowship at Woodbroke College (Quakers), the directorship of the Centre for Black and White Christian Partnership in Birmingham (which she founded together with Prof. W. Hollenweger and black church leaders) and a pastorate at the Ecumenical Centre Christuskirche in Frankfurt am Main, where she also founded the Forum for Ecumenical Intercultural Learning. Officially retired, she still works in an honorary capacity as a visiting fellow and lecturer at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Leeds University in England.

Her extensive field studies of black Christianity in Britain, the Americas and more recently in Africa have ideally equipped her to initiate the African Christian Diaspora in Europe project. She is one of the relatively rare European scholars who is observing and reflecting on African (and other migrant) Christian communities, and does so from a participatory point of view.

Dr Gerloff published A Plea for British Black Theologies: the Black Church Movement in Britain in its intercultural theological and cultural interaction, 2 vols., Bern, Peter Lang, 1992. Some of her extensive writings are listed in the bibliography, which she prepared specially for IRM.

She was key in the organization of the consultation that this issue documents and has invested an enormous amount of work, thought and time for IRM.

As editor, I also want to express my thanks to Jean Rowland (Leeds) who typed many of the articles into the computer, and to the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Leeds University for allowing the use of its facilities.

I am glad that, thanks to this cooperation, IRM can present one of the main challenges and opportunities for mission in Europe. …
