In northern England, the West Yorkshire African Caribbean Council of Churches (WYACC) was formed almost six years ago. It grew out of a common desire within the black-majority church community for greater koinonia of fellowship, and a wish to combine their collective efforts to help bring about positive change for those living in communities served by these churches.

WYACC is a collection of some nineteen congregations from the inner city areas of the county, viz. Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and Halifax, covering some ten different denominations. We are, in effect, the response to issues of social concern by members of the black-majority churches who have the vision to create a medium whereby our united voice can work for change.

With the help of the wider church community, we have been able for the last four years to employ a part-time projects development worker. Over our relatively short life, we have engaged in a number of projects and facilitated several training events, seminars and programmes. These include: day care provision of African Caribbean elders; a food pantry for those in need; a project to develop strategies to raise the educational achievement levels of African Caribbean school children; the church and psychiatry, and the church and economic development. We also run drugs education and child protection training programmes. We take part in united church services and ecumenical forums.

It is no secret that until fairly recently, black-majority churches demonstrated a certain unwillingness to be involved in the ecumenical life of the Wider church. …
