This issue of JSGE breaks new ground as the first journal in the gifted field devoting an entire issue to the topic of musical talent. My personal thanks to Rena Subotnik and Paula Olszewski-Kubilius for providing me with the opportunity to serve as guest editor. Thanks also to the readers of JSGE from those of us dedicated to the specialized area of giftedness in the arts for recognizing the need for such an issue. I believe it will create a firm foundation for expanded interest in arts talent development in the gifted field.

I have personally spent the last decade seeking out information across the fields of music psychology, music performance, music education, gifted/arts, and beyond to try to understand this musical "spark" we call talent. Along this route, I was fortunate to meet a handful of fellow "spark seekers" who share my fascination with musical learning and talent development. They present their ideas and knowledge in the following pages.

The opening article presents an overview of the literature on musical talent that addresses issues commonly facing talented students who reach the advanced level of development by the high school years. Specialists who are aware of the "delights and dilemmas" of these students may realize the value of extending beyond the school walls in the search for meaningful programs and curricula for these students.

Peter Webster, an expert in musical creativity and music technology, offers ideas about innovative curricula that provide an incentive for music educators to reinvent the role of the school "band director." His ideas exemplify a qualitatively differentiated curriculum for all students, with challenging options for talented students. …
