Effects of Vertical Water Exercise on Selected Muscle Strength Measures among Women Ages 24-55 Years

Although researchers have thoroughly documented the physiological declines of inactive lifestyles and the benefits of exercise, 25% of Americans are completely sedentary and another 60% are not regularly active. The most common reason for not exercising is lack of time. While the cardiovascular benefits of water exercise have been documented, less information is available about muscle endurance and strength gained from water aerobics participation. This study tested the hypothesis that apparently healthy, sedentary, working-age women who participated in a community water aerobics program for 8 posts, attending 1-hr classes three times per post, would show improvements in strength and endurance measures. Twenty-two community participants were tested before exercise intervention and after, for nine strength measures. Seven land-based tests evaluated muscle endurance in shoulder adduction and abduction, knee flexion and extension, plus measures of strength in abdominals, spinal extensors and a 1 RM leg press.
