Many young underserved children grow up in at-risk environments, which do not support physical activity. As a result, developmental delays in fundamental motor skills have been reported in these populations. This study was part of a larger study that examined the influence of a motor skill intervention on locomotor and object control performance. Locomotor skill performance was the focus of this particular investigation. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the developmental status of underserved preschoolers with respect to locomotor skill performance, and to determine the influence of a motor skill intervention on locomotor skill development. Participants consisted of children enrolled in a compensatory program for underserved Hispanic preschoolers with a mean age of 59.60 months (SD 4.33). The study included a motor skill intervention (MSI) group (n= 34) and a control group (n = 30) .The MSI group received a nine-post motor skill intervention consisting of two 30-min instructional sessions per post incorporating 130 min of locomotor and 410 min of object control instruction. Each session incorporated three skill stations with three groups of children rotating to each station over the 30-min period. All children were videotaped while performing the Test of Gross Motor Development prior to and following the 9-post period. …
