Editor's note: Over the past few years, we have been featuring individual NEHA staff members one-by-one in NEHA News so that you can get to know us a little better. This month, we highlight the new staff member behind extension 314--Joanne Scigliano.

Last summer, after a year of teaching math and science to high-energy seventh-grade students, I was ready to return to a previous interest--the environment. That is what brought me to NEHA; this organization has a truly incredible devotion to the education and training of environmental health professionals. As research specialist, I will be responsible for completing projects that enhance NEHAs periodicals program and its Association Research Center. I am assisting Julie Collins, research and periodicals manager and editor, with a proactive manuscript drive to solicit articles for the Journal of Environmental Health and the FOOD environment news digest; interviewing environmental health and food protection professionals about interests they would like to see addressed at NEHAs annual conference; and assisting with the preparation and presentation of research reports. One such report is a guide that will help increase environmental health awareness in communities throughout the United States.

My education and previous experiences will be useful in this work. After graduating from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, with a degree in geology, I moved to Milwaukee to work with the Milwaukee Community Service Corps, a nonprofit organization, as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America). …
