The Council of the International Federation of Environmental Health (1FEH) met in Cyprus in November 2000, and significant actions were taken in a number of areas. As many Journal readers are aware, IFEH is an international trade association whose members are national environmental health societies. NEHA, for example, is a member.

The Council will be requesting that IFEH have representation on the Food Hygiene Committee of Codex Alimentarius. Two IFEH members (the Austrian and Ireland associations) already have places on the committee. The German association has offered to represent IFEH on the committee and to assume the financial cost of that representation.

In another major initiative, IFEH is determining how it should be represented at Earth Summit 2002 and at Rio + 10. IFEH's Europe Group (comprising member organizations in Europe) is taking the lead role in developing this program, with assistance from the Pacific Rim Group.

IFEH has long had a significant interest in the development of environmental health initiatives in the African continent. One example has been fundraising for an environmental health library to support a degree program in environmental health at the university in Dares Salaam, Tanzania. At its November meeting, the Council committed up to [pound]5,000 sterling (approximately $8,000) from its development fund to facilitate an event that could bring together environmental health professionals for the purpose of improving the health of African peoples. …
