Registration by Phone Benefits Students and Administrators Alike

In Big Rapids, Mich., Ferris State College students played an integral role in increasing effective services with an improved registration process.

Ferris President J. William Wenrich, Registrar Paul Schnepf and Assistant Vice President of Information Services and Telecommunications Jerry Nogy worked closely with a student task force to examine the problems of lengthy registration lines, closed classes and administrative paperwork.

Their decision to utilize an automated telephone registration system to manage student registration has, according to Nogy, "answered one of the most frequent concerns expressed by all college students: easy, convenient and efficient registration."

The TeleRegistrar system from Periphonics Corp. of Long Island, N.Y., was tested successfully in June and July of 1987 among 3,000 freshman and transfer students. A 20-line system was subsequently installed to enroll Ferris' entire 11,800-member student body. "The installation proceeded very quickly," states Registrar Schnepf. "It went so well, it was a matter of simply turning the system on."

Versatile Features

Students interface directly with Ferris' host computer (an IBM 3083) using any touch-tone telephone to register for classes and employing the telephone keypad to make their selections. A series of prompts, announced clearly in a human voice, guide the caller through each phase of registration.

Assistant Vice President Nogy comments, "Periphonics' U-Talk option enables the college to develop, record and digitize our own messages. …
