Critical Thinking

With the support of Cross Country University and American Mobile Healthcare, A&E is engaged in the process of developing a multiple-choice test that assesses the critical thinking abilities of students in RN nursing programs. The questions relate to nursing. In a parallel process, A&E will also be developing tests for nurses in practice, including separate tests for staff nurses and nurse managers.

A panel of distinguished experts is assisting NLN staff in this work. A brainstorming session was held in New York to arrive at a definition of critical thinking. Participants were Rosalinda Alfaro-LeFevre, Dr. Bette Case, Dr. Marsha Fonteyn, Dr. Janice Ingle, Dr. Fran Monahan, Lisa Rebeschi, M. Gaie Rubenfeld, Barbara Scheffer, and Dr. Cesarina Thompson; Sunny Sutton, representing American Mobile Healthcare; and Jon Rosen, of Graphic Education Corporation, and Dr. Rosemary Westra, representing Cross Country Nursing. Other distinguished educators on the panel are Dr. Chris Tanner, Dr. Laura Mahlmeister, and Dr. Carrie Lundberg.

Dr. Terry Valiga, NLN Director of Research and Professional Development, facilitated the work of the original brainstorming session.
