Big-Screen Projectors Enhance the Technical Curriculum at Purdue

Purdue University, a school long noted for the excellence of its technical curriculum, recently enhanced some classrooms' sessions by upgrading its technical equipment. An audio/visual system installed to present films and educational videos to large audiences in some campus lecture halls had become outdated and unreliable.

In its search for a solution to the problem, Purdue evaluated the capabilities of various state-of-the-art projection systems. With the assistance of Allied Telecommunications, a major Midwest audio/video dealer, the university set up a side-by-side demonstration of projectors said to fulfill all of Purdue's requirements.

After a carefully controlled assessment, a projection system manufactured by Barco Electronics, Inc. of Smyrna, Ga., was selected. The system was chosen on the basis of its picture clarity, image resolution and flexibility. It afforded Purdue the ability to switch between as many as ten different sources at the push of a button. As a result, classroom and lecture hall demonstrations could dynamically link video, workstation and PC data and graphics.

In all, there are now ten Barco projectors in use at Purdue. Two Barcographics 400s are in place in the Materials Science and Electrical Engineering Building. These utilize a Macintosh computer to display software and digital circuitry in the building's 400- and 100-seat lecture halls.

A Barcodata 1001 is employed by the sociology department to train students on the SPSS statistical package. …
