NCSS Moving to Silver Spring, Maryland

National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) will move its national office to Silver Spring, Maryland in July. NCSS has signed a 10-year lease for 5,492 square feet of new office space on the fifth floor of the recently renovated Summit Building at 8555 16th Street. Our 80-year old association has been in its present facilities at 3501 Newark Street, NW, in the District of Columbia since 1982.

The move provides both the NCSS staff and members with a number of positive changes. Although the total office space in the new facility is only slightly more than the 5,072 square feet of the present office complex, there is significantly more useable space in the new facility. This extra space will provide for more comfortable accommodations and space to grow.

"After almost 20 years of working in what was once a former girl's dormitory," said Executive Director Susan Griffin; "the staff and I are really excited about this move into real office spaces. Currently many of our 19 employees share office space in the former dormitory rooms."

In the present facility, conference rooms are shared with the building's landlord, and storage is limited. There are no kitchen facilities and other amenities, such as parking, are limited. …
