The Journal of Southeast Asian Studies is now in its 32nd year of publication, or 42nd year if the Journal of Southeast Asian History that preceded it is taken into consideration. Anyone who has worked on a journal recognizes the extraordinary amount of labour that goes into the researching and writing of articles and book reviews, and the preparation of manuscripts to appear in print; a journal with a lifespan of more than 40 years represents an enormous investment of time and effort on the part of all concerned. The rewards are modest - for authors, an entry in their curriculum vitae, for book reviewers a new volume for their shelves, for editors the satisfaction of seeing articles they helped bring into print cited in other books and articles. (Happily, articles from the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies now figure in the footnotes and bibliographies of many publications on this region, giving the editorial staff a clear sense that the Journal is reaching its intended audience.) For the scholars who refe ree the articles, that essential group whose expertise provides a vital element of integrity for any international refereed journal, there is only anonymity and the satisfaction of having performed one of the tasks that sustain the academic world. During my tenure as editor of the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies I have tapped this pool of knowledge and expertise many times, and I am extremely grateful for the generous response I have received.

With this issue the Journal moves to a new publisher, Cambridge University Press. …
