Research conducted and supported by the NIEHS is targeted toward reducing the burden of human diseases resulting from environmental exposures and their complex interactions with human genetics and time. Within the Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT), the major role of the Program Analysis Branch (PAB) is to evaluate the scientific and public health impacts of research supported by the NIEHS through grants and contracts. As part of its mission, the PAB communicates the results of research supported by the institute to a wide variety of audiences including congressional staff, NIH administrators, public interest groups, NIEHS staff, and the general public.

As a method of accomplishing this task, the PAB started a new feature in January 2000 to highlight research being supported by the NIEHS at academic research institutions across the United States. Each month, the PAB searches the most recent scientific literature for interesting papers published in high-impact journals by NIEHS grantees and contractors. …
