The "I" in ACEI has taken on different meanings through the years, and I have been thinking about what it means or should mean in the year 2001.

Although I was not a member when the Association's interest in international activities began, I am aware of the history and evolution of the international focus in the organization. Years ago, I served on the International/Intercultural Committee, at a time when very few members of the organization were from outside the United States or Canada.

Since that time, more and more members from countries outside of North America have joined ACEI, and the number of ACEI Branches located in countries other than the United States has increased. Interest in creating more new Branches throughout the world has led to the creation of an International Development Fund. Each year, those monies continue to grow as members send contributions specifically designated for the fund. The ACEI Executive Board has established guidelines for the use of this fund. Like all ACEI Restricted Funds, only the interest can be used for projects and activities. With that interest money, ACEI is striving to found and support new Branches around the world that will extend ACEI's mission into a more global arena and bring to light innovative and effective teaching practices. …
