Like you, we at HRPS who prepare this Journal (a team effort by HRPS staff, members, volunteers, publishing professionals) were shocked and dismayed by the events of September 11. Like you, we reassessed priorities and said our share of prayers of sorrow and thanks.

It's true that the landscape of our profession has changed dramatically in what seems like an instant. Catchy phrases like the "war for talent" and "knowledge management" sound a bit trite now when we are dealing with the challenges of a real war and the emotionally draining demands of grievance management.

HR planning has long been an area where the theoretical world of research intersects with the practical world of HR leadership. In a time when everything seems less stable, this is something that hasn't changed. The Journal will continue to be a place where the best of theory intersects with the best of practice.

In this issue we again have three challenging and interesting articles to share with you. The first article, by Swiercz and Ezzedeen: "From Sorcery to Science: AHP, a Powerful New Tool for Executive Selection," provides a critical look at the executive selection process. HRPS, through its development workshops and publications, has long been attentive to organizational efforts to find and develop outstanding executive talent. …
