Health Care Executives Present 2001 Research Award. (Recent Health Care Developments)

Richard M. Shewchuk, Stephen J. O'Connor, and David J. Fine--professors in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham-are the winners of the American College of Healthcare Executives' (ACHE) 2001 Health Management Research Award for their proposed study, "Building an Understanding of Qualifies Needed for Health Administration Practice: A Cognitive Mapping Approach." They will receive $10,000 to support their research.

The group's research will attempt to define a set of core competencies needed for effective health care management practice as perceived by two different groups: health care practitioners and health care academicians. The study builds on more than 10 years of consumer-oriented research efforts by Shewchuk and O'Connor.

The researchers will conduct surveys and other assessments with both health care practitioners and health care management faculty. Based on data culled from the surveys, the researchers will develop a comprehensive understanding of the issues in the health care environment and what skills, knowledge, and abilities these two groups believe health care executives must possess in order to manage effectively. …
