In "Our Do'ers Profile," we highlight some of the hard-working and talented individuals in the public human services field. This issue features Janet Schalansky of the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services in Topeka, Kansas.

Name: Janet K. Schalansky

Title: Secretary of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services

Years of Service: I began with the department in May 1973 but left for two short periods of time with other agencies. I have been secretary for three years.

Rewards of the Job: My reward is being able to see significant changes in the way we deliver services to children, adults, and families.

Accomplishments Most Proud of: I was fortunate to be part of a group that designed waiver programs that have significantly increased in-home and community-based services for the elderly, disabled, and developmentally disabled.

Future Challenges for the Delivery of Public Service: The immediate concern faced by many public services agencies is the growing demand for services, which are depleting the available financial resources. Many agencies are faced with reprioritizing the services that are delivered. It will be critical to continue to invest in prevention and early intervention programs. The other issue that must remain on our radar screens is the ability of public agencies to attract appropriately trained new staff, retain current staff, and meet the demands for staff training and career development. Projections for availability of staff 10 to 15 years out would suggest that we need new strategies to address this issue. …
