The Lord be with you. Let us pray.

Dear Lord, as we gather to break bread with old friends, and to share a meal with new friends, our hearts are filled with gratitude.

Knowing that all good gifts come from you, we thank you for this food and this wine, and we ask your blessing on it. We thank you also for the privilege of being surrounded by so many who share a love for literature and a love for you. We thank you for the ways those loves can quicken each other, increasing our apprehension of your grace and whetting our appreciation for imaginative literature in which the real presence of your created order is reflected. So we ask you to bless our conversation around these tables as we share in the joy of fellowship with one another.

But as we gather for this feast of our own, we are mindful that today is the Feast Day of the Holy Innocents. And as we remember today the slaughter of the innocent children of Bethlehem by King Herod, we also commend into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims. …
