Management and Operation of User Services. (MOUSS Tales)

Article excerpt

From the Chair

This has been a busy year for RUSA's Management and Operation of User Services section. Not only have we been conducting our section review under the thoughtful leadership of David Null (our past past-chair), but Emilie Smart (long-time member of the Services to Aging Populations Committee and our current RUSA representative to the ADA Assembly) will be representing MOUSS on a RUSA task force looking at possible future organizational changes that might help us (among other things) to better address front-line reference interests. Our very own MOUSSer Lars Leon (former chair of the ILL Committee) will be a representative to IFLA. And we have two MOUSS programs scheduled for ALA 2002 in Atlanta: the MOUSS ILL Committee's "Patron-Focused Services Models of Collaborative Interlibrary Loan, Collection Development and Acquisitions" (Sunday June 16, 1:30 P.M.) and the MOUSS Services to Adults Committee's "Making our Place Their Place: Advertising, Marketing, and Programs" (Monday, June 17, 10:30 A.M.) These are just a few of this year's highlights for MOUSS, which represents a wonderful cross-section of librarians for whom public service is their raison d'etre.

An important note of interest to MOUSS members: the revisions to our section bylaws developed last year will be presented and voted on at a very brief MOUSS business meeting at the very beginning of the MOUSS ILL program on June 16, 2002, at 1:30 P.M. Please remember to check the ALA Annual Conference program for the location of that ILL program. The revised bylaws are available on the Web at www.ala.org/rusa/mouss/ committees/exec/bylaws01.htm. Remember, our section represents reference and other user services librarians as well as service managers. We hope to see many of our members in Atlanta, voting on the bylaws and enjoying the programs!--Gwen Arthur; garthur@clarku.edu
