A Primer on Sampling for Biological Contaminants, Part Two: Air Sampling Instrumentation. (Tools for Environmental Health)

Article excerpt

All too often, when we are faced with the daunting task of sampling intramural air for microbial contaminants, we borrow a sampling device from an acquaintance, who just happens to be an industrial hygienist--and, with blissful innocence, place the sampler in the middle of the room, load it with the collection medium, turn on the pump, and sample away. Two days later, we either horror at a plate entirely covered with green-peach-gray-black fuzz and one milky-white slimy colony with tentacles, or offer high-fives all the way around for having a sterile environment and finding absolutely nothing. What we generally fail to do is answer the critical initial question: Why sample at all? Followed by: Are we interested in qualification or quantification or both, total bioburden or respirable mass, bioburden under static or dynamic conditions, or point-source contamination or infiltration? Or are we looking for the total biological profile of the building? Realistically, only after we have answered these questions ca n we properly select a sampling device and hopefully get useful data.

Not all biological air samplers are alike. Different devices answer different questions, depending on the circumstance of the contamination and the different modes of collection inherent in the devices themselves. Although we take comfort in using the air sampler supplied by our industrial-hygienist friend, it may not be the right choice for our situation. …
